Bernard Gauthier: I’m so excited… The new Yellow Pages are here!

A friend of mine runs a local festival, and got a call from the Yellow Pages asking if he wanted to renew his ad. When they asked why he didn't, he replied "because it's the year 2007?"

I agree with you in that directories, such as the Yellow Pages, are becoming less relevant. They lack efficiency and effectiveness. However, we must look at the audience that these advertisers are targeting. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they realize that anyone with minimal computer abilities will not look at their advertisements. Hence, they must be targeting the few people in our society with no computer skills. In which case, you are right in that inevitably these forms of written advertisements will become inept. People are more vulnerable to advertisement which is visual and in their face, such as television, internet, product placement, billboards and so forth. It is a new era and businesses will all soon realize the ineffectiveness of such tools as directories.

Thanks, Neda. You make a very good point about not taking it for granted that all consumers are computer literate. Much appreciated.

Not sure if you know about this site but it is gaining ground daily for consumers that do not want a telephone book delivered.

Consumers can “opt out” of receiving telephone books at www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org. They will contact the publishers and inform them to stop delivering books. This is a free service for consumers. www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org is working with state and local governments on ordinances concerning the delivery of unsolicited telephone books. www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org is not against the telephone books but against the delivery of 4 to 5 pounds of paper on people’s door step 5 to 6 times per year and being told it is our responsibility to recycle something we did not ask for. If we need a book we will call. Otherwise I “opt out” from receiving it.
